01-2015 Reasons of leisure journeys

In 2013, about 83% of the Luxembourg population went on at least one leisure journey of at least one overnight stay. This represents altogether 1.4 million journeys of which only 4% stayed in the Grand Duchy. The reasons for the journeys vary strongly according to the period of the year, the destination and the travelers. The main motivation for leisure trips is relaxation (34%), followed by family/friends visits (31%). 33% of the short-term journeys (maximum 3 overnight stays and excluding family/friends visits) are dedicated to culture. Among the long-term journeys (minimum 4 overnight stays and excluding family/friends visits), the most frequent motivations, after relaxation, are culture (15%), beach (13%) and sports (12%). Journeys dedicated to shopping cost on average 291€ per person per day. For trips to family or friends, an average budget of 88 € per person per day was needed.
