02-2015 Burglary and burglary attempts
According to the crime survey 2013, 10% of households were victims of a burglary and 9% of burglary attempts in the last 5 years in their property in Luxembourg or abroad. The great majority of the break-ins (83%) took place in the Grand Duchy and almost a third (35%) occurred between 10pm and 6am. In 73% of cases, the dwelling was concerned; outdoor installations, annexes and garden sheds were less often targeted (26%). In about 8 out of 10 burglaries theft was actually committed but physical violence was rather rare (2%). 21% of the incidents were not declared to the police, generally because the victims felt that it was worth spending any time on it. When the burglary was reported, 47% of the declarers were "very satisfied" and 23% "satisfied" with police services. Victims of burglaries or attempted burglaries feel more often than non-victims that criminality has globally increased. They value less the work of the police and the courts and are rather in favor of prison sentences for burglars whereas non-victims rather plead for penalties in the form of community services.
