The Safety Survey

The Safety Survey (Enquête sur la Sécurité) covers the resident population aged 16 or more living in private households. It provides detailed information on the victimization experiences this population has had in the last five years.

The survey questionnaire is based on the blueprint questionnaire which sprang from the European project « EU Safety Survey » as well as on the feedback from the International Crime Survey (EU-ICS) which had been conducted in Luxembourg in 2004/2005.

The Safety Survey focuses on different types of crimes and offences (burglary, car theft, robbery…) as well as on non-conventional types of crimes such as consumer fraud or bribery. It is a valuable source of information on criminality in Luxembourg. Data on both physical and sexual were also collected.

The results of the survey are disseminated via STATEC publications in collaboration with the University of Luxembourg.

Data collection

The Safety Survey was conducted via telephone interviews. The company INFAS (Institut für angewandte Sozialwissenschaft GmbH) was in charge of the interviews. Phone numbers were randomly generated by computer using the « Random Digit Dialing » technique.

A pre-test was made in March 2013 based on a sample of 100 individuals. The fieldwork started at the end of June 2013 and took two months. Finally, 3000 telephone interviews were completed.
